HONORING Yesterday
In early colonial history there were not enough people or resources to maintain continuous standing police forces as we know today. In times of trouble with river pirates, criminals, Indian uprisings, and such, messages were sent out to farmers and other ordinary citizens for help as volunteers for the local militia. This early form of private security, volunteers helping their own, in spirit continues today. Over time, security became organized into public entities, each with their own responsibilities to localities and their citizens. However, public safety and security needs could not always be met by the sheriff or other sworn officers. People were needed other than ordinary citizen volunteers to assist in protecting homes, small businesses, banks, utilities, medical facilities, and the railroad. Recognizing this, private detective agencies began forming by the mid 1850s. With continued expansion of the country, so also did the need for expansion of private security to work in mutual cooperation with our federal, state, and local officials and law enforcement.
OPERATING Today
Along with our country’s continued rapid growth over the past century, the role of private security also has grown. While the need continues for protection as in the past, new issues in areas such as security for large-scale events, air and high-speed transportation, cybersecurity, homeland security, and the like have opened doors for more challenges and opportunities for security professionals. Miller Consulting Group, Inc. has met the challenges facing small private security service businesses consistently by offering a wide range of investigative and protective services for today’s needs.
