Northern Virginia Security Academy, the training division of Miller Consulting Group, Inc., has offered private security services training services on a regular basis since its inception in 1976.  All of our instructors are certified and our courses and lesson plans approved by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).  We offer DCJS approved entry-level and in-service courses as well as special interest classes and training.  Upon satisfactory completion of required coursework, students are eligible to apply for DCJS registration.  After approval, they would be able to apply for employment in their chosen categories in Virginia.

GENERAL FIREARMS TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

*Firearms endorsement is required for all who carry or have immediate access to a firearm while on duty.
*Registrants must qualify with each type of action and caliber of firearm to which they have access.
*Firearms retraining must be completed annually, No Sooner than 90 days before expiration of Endorsement

Course content to include: (a) Administration and personal protection orientation; (b) Signs of terrorism; (c) Applicable sections of VA
Code and Regulations; (d) Assessment of threat and protectee vulnerability; (e) Legal authority and civil law; (f) Protective detail
operations; (g) Emergency procedures; (h) Performance evaluation - five practical exercises; (i) Written comprehensive exam

Course content to include: (a) Practical handgun handling; (b) Fundamentals of marksmanship; (c) Dim light/low light/reduced light practice and familiarization; (d) Use of force; (e) Liability; (f) Judgmental shooting; (g) Lead exposure; (h) Written exam; (i) Range qualification

(075E) Security Officer Handgun training - 24 hours (plus exam & range qualification) required for all Armed Security Officers and optional as prerequisite course for Personal Protection Specialist
Course content to include: (a) Practical handgun handling, (b) Fundamentals of marksmanship, (c) Dim light/low light/reduced light practice and familiarization, (d) Use of force, (e) Liability, (f) Judgmental shooting; judgmental shooting scenarios, (g) Lead exposure, (h) Written exam, (i) Range qualification

PREREQUISITE: Satisfactorily complete either (07E) Entry-level or (75E) Security Officer Handgun training
(08E) Entry-Level Shotgun – 3 hours (plus exam & range qualification)

Course content to emphasize: (a) Shotgun handling techniques; (b) Fundamentals of shotgun marksmanship, (c) Written exam, (d) Range qualification

PREREQUISITE: Satisfactorily complete either (07E) Entry-level or (75E) Security Officer Handgun training

(09E) Advanced Handgun Training – 14 hours (plus exam and range qualification score 92%)

Course content to include: (a) Firearms safety, (b) Civil & criminal liability, (c) Concealed carry law & authority, (d) Function of firearms in close protection operations; (e) Deployment of firearms in close protection operations; (f) Use of force; (g) Principles of advanced marksmanship; (h) Decision-making for the personal protection specialist; (i) Written exam; (j) Range qualification course entailing five increasingly challenging stages of advanced firearms exercises with a 92% score required

Firearms Retraining

(07R) Handgun Retraining – 4 hours (plus range time & requalification)
(07R) Retraining covers requirement for everyone with handgun except Personal Protection Specialists
Must be completed annually no sooner than 90 days before expiration of Firearms Endorsement

(08R) Shotgun Retraining – 3 hours (plus range time & requalification)
Must be completed annually no sooner than 90 days before expiration of Firearms Endorsement

(09R) Advanced Handgun Retraining for Armed Personal Protection Specialists – 8 hours (plus range & requalification score of 92%)
Course content: (1) Legal decision-making; (2) Handgun safety, marksmanship, and skill development
Must be completed annually no sooner than 90 days before expiration of Firearms Endorsement
